Let me be the first to say, “Whaaaaaaaat?”
Alright, call me a hopeless sap if you would like, but I absolutely adore receiving flowers, no matter where I’m at. I thought this was a universal truth: girls like flowers. I mean, sure, there are girls who say they don’t like flowers to sound tough and independent. But we all really like flowers, right?
No, ladies of The Grindstone. You have proven me completely incorrect. In fact, an astonishing 46.7% of you don’t want to get flowers at work. Who are you people?
Since I’m obviously not a member of this group, I can only guess as to the reasoning behind this floral embarrassment. (Commenters feel free to give me some insight!!) My assumption would be that some people simply don’t enjoy their home life mixing with their professional life. The presence of flowers in your office seems to invite co-workers and bosses to ask personal questions about your love life. While some women have no problem opening up about their private relationships (some, even a little too much), other women don’t want their dating life to interfere in the business world.
In another way, receiving flowers is such a feminine symbol. Those delicate little roses are definitely girly. For women who are trying to prove their strength in a male-dominated field, a romantic gesture might translate into a show of weakness.
Honestly, I’m just grasping for straws here. I could really use some direction. So ladies, why do you dislike this standard V-Day gift? I’m sure Adriana Lima is dying to know. She was so certain that flowers could get a guy lucky.
Just how is receiving flowers at work embarrassing?
