Our Favorite Jokes From Female Comedians That Only Women Can Do

Earlier this week I was lucky enough to attend a talk with Doug Abeles, currently a writer for “Weekend Update” on Saturday Night Live. Abeles has worked for SNL since 2001 and prior to that he was a writer for Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher and The Martin Short Show.

When Abeles was telling us about history at SNL he, of course, got to bring up some of the ladies he has written for and collaborated with over there which included Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. While I was trying to hold my jaw up as he told us stories of Sarah Palin’s time at “Weekend Update” and why Christopher Walken was one of his favorite hosts, he said something very interesting about women in comedy. “There are certain areas where it’s better for a woman to do a joke than a man. It’s better for a woman to deliver it,” said Abeles. He said he was worried that sounded sexist but his intention was the opposite.

This got me thinking of other female comedians and wondering if there are certain lines that only they can say and get away with but a man could not. Dan Harmon, creator of the show Community, said in a recent interview, ““My new thing is, ‘Are women funnier than men?’” He then went on to talk about how female comedy writers provide “deeper laughs” but he said there is just a lack of females in comedy writing so staffs often end up being all male.

Well I don’t know if women are funnier than men or if we will ever have a way to really prove that but for now let’s take a look at some of our favorite jokes that only women could deliver.
