MTV CEO Judy McGrath Resigns, Possibly Over Reality Show Frustration

MTV Networks CEO Judy McGrath announced her resignation today after nearly 30 years as an employee of the company and seven years as CEO and chairman. No successor has been named yet.

In an official announcement from Viacom, MTV’s parent company, McGrath wrote “The people of MTV Networks have always been singularly important to me. Together we have built world-class brands that connect with fans from kid to adulthood, from SpongeBob to Hot In Cleveland, from Unplugged to The Daily Show.”

Reports have been circulating for a few years that McGrath was close to leaving the company because of disagreements over certain reality shows the network chose to air on MTV. In the last ten years MTV has evolved from a channel known primarily for its music video content to a reality show ratings powerhouse best known for its shows centering on teen pregnancy (See Crushable.com).

Rumors have been flying today that McGrath left over the networks decision to air the reality show The Electric Barbarellas but a spokesman for Viacom denied this.
