Economic reporter Gayle Tzemach Lemmon made some fascinating points at her most recent TEDxWomen talk. She has been interviewing amazing female entrepreneurs from all over the world in countries where women are literally going out in the middle of war zones and starting profitable businesses. She talked about one woman in Bosnia who started squatting in abandoned garages selling sheets and pillowcases to support her family. She now has 20 employees, most of whom are women.
The problem is, said Lemmon, is these female entrepreneurs need investments but women are still automatically filed under the microfinance category. She said most people associate the word microfinance with women and the word entrepreneur with men. “We aim and think small when it comes to women. Microfinance is a powerful tool but we must move beyond micro-hopes and micro-ambition for women.” Watch more of her fascinating and inspiring talk.
