The Grindstone Gives ABC News Salary Negotiation Tips

This week ABC News approached The Grindstone for some salary negotiation tips, especially for women. A new study claims that women could earn more but the problem is, we don’t ask for it. Male workers negotiate for higher salaries, up to nine times more than their female colleagues. How do we change this? Strategize.

Grindstone Editor At Large Debra Shigley says you can go into a meeting better prepared if you go in with your game face. Go to web sites like GlassDoor.com where you can look at salary comparisons, she says. You also need to explain your value to your boss. Show off your accomplishments. If you started an initiative, point it out. If that isn’t working, trick your mind into thinking you are really asking for this salary for another person, like your child. But, don’t say that during the meeting. Keep emotions out of it. You need to stay professional no matter what happens. Anticipate your boss’s reactions. And remember just because you may get a no, it doesn’t mean the conversation is over. Shigley said see if a conversation like this could lead to a bump in your title or maybe being put on a special project.

According to a recent Grindstone poll, 50% of our readers have taken our salary negotiation advice and have seen positive results. Watch the video below to get more tips.
