Sorry Hilary Duff. Lizzie McGuire and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 just can’t hold a candle to the woman that invented that is responsible for people saying, “If you like it, then you better a ring on it.” It was reported today that Beyoncé’s new movie A Star Is Born has had to be pushed back after the singer revealed she is expecting her first child. Clint Eastwood’s musical remake had been due to start shooting in February 2012, but insiders on the film told Deadline Hollywood that Warner Bros ‘could push’ the start date on the film. It is also claimed the delay to the start of shooting will give them longer to find a suitable leading man after Eastwood failed to convince Leonardo DiCaprio to sign on.
This is especially interesting considering the fact that just last week we found out that the newly expecting Hilary Duff just got dropped by a film because of her pregnancy interfering with the production timeline. Beyonce’s announcement is pretty much just rubbing salt in Duff’s already open wound.
Mommyish editor Koa Beck wrote “Beyonce is clearly a bigger “get” for any studio than Hilary. Through her career and many accolades, Beyonce has established herself as a performer — and now a soon-to-be mother — worth waiting for.” I couldn’t agree more, even though I was a big fan of Cheaper by the Dozen 2. However, this does bring up the question that will certain women be treated better regarding maternity leave if they are more valuable to the company?
It should also be noted that this year’s MTV VMAs could have been called “Beyonce’s Pregnancy Party.” I honestly think the woman is an amazing talent and is truly a super star, but did she need to announce her pregnancy at an awards show that is supposed to be a celebration of the entire music industry? At the same time though, the VMAs has literally become a costume party parade (what was Katy Perry wearing on her head?) and Beyonce is one of our most celebrated music artists, so why not? I almost teared up a little after her performance of “Love on Top” when she revealed her small but definite baby bump. We didn’t get the usual scantily-clad, jumping around Beyonce, but we got an amazing performance from a beaming mother to be who is still dedicated to her work.
